The Process
I start off every piece with a value and shape sketch. I do this because it allows me to create a loose colour scheme to work with, while also making sure that the values are working well together and nothing gets lost in translation.
I then proceed to work on defining the shapes that are withing the elements silhouettes with a simple sketch. This helped me endure that the perspective in the piece is correct.
I Like to figure out lighting after the previous step. I decide on lighting by first deciding what time of day it is, where the location is set, and what colours will work best with the images colour scheme. This also allows me to take the perspective sketch off of the image and start to paint looser.
Finally I add textures to each of the elements in the image. This adds more realism in the piece and can allow the materials of each object to be clearer to see.
